Resumen

Este artículo explora el contexto científico británico previo a la Ley de Boticarios de 1815, la cual marcó el surgimiento del médico general. Examina avances clave en química y medicina durante principios del siglo XIX, destacando la influencia de la Revolución Industrial, la urbanización y centros científicos como la Royal Institution. Pioneros como Humphry Davy, John Dalton y Edward Jenner revolucionaron la química y la medicina mediante descubrimientos como la teoría atómica, la electrólisis y la vacunación. El artículo también aborda los desafíos de la cirugía preanestésica, el control de enfermedades infecciosas y la lenta integración de la química en la práctica médica. Se señalan avances tecnológicos como el estetoscopio y la transfusión sanguínea, así como reformas de salud pública impulsadas por figuras como Edwin Chadwick. En última instancia, este periodo sentó las bases de la medicina moderna y de la profesionalización de la ciencia.
