Abstract

Human life happens within a physical world that, far from being neutral, conditions and shapes our experiences. If we observe our surroundings, we can find material elements that influence how we move, interact and feel. This article extends that reflection to the educational field, aiming to analyze the relationship between physical environment and school experience. Based on a review of the state of knowledge, a referential model called the Relational Model of Educational Habitability is proposed, developed within the framework of doctoral research. This model allows school’s physical environment to be understood from a relational and multidimensional perspective, integrating three levels of analysis: functional, practical and symbolic. This theoretical contribution seeks to offer a useful conceptual tool for a complex understanding of the school environment as a structuring dimension of the educational phenomenon.
